Oxygen atoms often steal electrons from other atoms they come in contact with. Oxidation is the chemical reaction that happens when an atom, or compound, loses one or more electrons. This is what causes metal to rust and apple to turn brown.
What Happens to Oxidized Cannabis
The electrons lost through oxidation cause the Δ 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) molecules in cannabis to degrade into cannabinol (CBN).
The Problem with CBN
CBN is less psychoactive than THC. It is an oxidized form of THC that is known for its sedative effects. Degraded cannabis products lower potency and can have unintended effects on the end user.
